From ancient times philosophers have debated the question of the relation between ethics and aesthetics. Wittgenstein in his Tractatus argues, ”it is clear that ethics cannot be put into words. Ethics is transcendental. (Ethics and aesthetics are one and the same)  6.421.”  The purpose of this lecture is to defend Wittgenstein’s position.

Prof. Yaroslav (Slava) Senyshyn specializes in the area of music and aesthetic philosophy at Simon Fraser University’s Faculty of Education. In addition to his scholarly work he is also a Steinway Artist for Albany Records, New York.

Senior Students from the Langley Fine Arts School have been considering philosophical perspectives on aesthetic experience using dialogue and phenomenological approaches as part of a MODAL Research Group exploratory program in transformative arts engagement.
